Well I discovered the difference it makes doing my coloured outlines with the "Pencil" tool (which doesn't present nearly as much anti-aliasing as the "Pen" tool does - in using the "Pencil" tool I seem to have entirely avoided the plague of little white and oddly shaded dots which would always occur between my fill colour and my darkened outline. By then going back over the outline with the "Pen" tool it still gives it that hearty shaded look that gives it better definition.
